THE THIEF LORD Makes Great Words, Great Works list!

Exciting news! Today, we learned that Cornelia's middle-grades title The Thief Lord has been chosen as a 2018 Great Words, Great Works title by the Scripps National Spelling Bee!

The Great Words, Great Works list's purpose is to highlight books that introduce students to rich and varied spelling, as well as vocabulary words in the context of engaging stories. Needless to say, we're excited for The Thief Lord to be on the list as a 5th grade fiction book.

The first US publication of The Thief Lord was in 2002. It tells the story of Prosper and Bo, orphaned brothers who have run away to Venice, where crumbling canals and misty alleyways shelter a secret community of street urchins. The leader of this motley crew of lost children is a clever, charming boy with a dark history of his own, who calls himself the Thief Lord.

Prosper and Bo relish their new "family" and life of petty crime, but their cruel aunt and a bumbling detective are on their trail. A beautiful magical treasure from long ago threatens their safety, but may be the answer to the freedom they're looking for.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee provides teachers with reading recommendations covering a variety of genres and topics, classic to contemporary, fiction to nonfiction. Every word on the 2018 School Spelling Bee Study List can be found in one of the books from the corresponding grade level. Nearly 11 million students across the US use this list to prepare for classroom and school spelling bees.

Thanks to Scripps for giving The Thief Lord the opportunity to find more young readers!
